Confessions of a Sewaholic

Entry 4: September and October are always crazy busy for me. It starts with my wedding anniversary and then goes into my favorite holiday, Halloween! I have such an addiction to buying Halloween related fabrics and projects, and then there is never enough time to create them all and make a new Halloween costume to premier at my other job.

Next we go into to November, and now I need (want) to make more Thanksgiving items to change the decorations in my home without giving in to full on Christmas decor. I know that Christmas is a favorite holiday of many, and I see the holiday lights going up in the neighborhoods near me already, but I’m a traditionalist and want to celebrate each holiday during its given time. Besides, Thanksgiving is about the only American holiday that hasn’t become so commercialized that it is still about spending time with family and friends and not about giving presents, gift cards or other monetary admonishments to show how much others mean to us.

In addition for prepping for the biggest and best comfort food meal of the year, November is also when a few of us get together for a 3-4 day quilt retreat! Our quilt retreat is basically an adult sleep over party in a beautiful location, but with sewing. We spend all day and night in comfy pajamas or sweats, snacking and drinking our favorite junk food, talking about whatever comes to mind, listening to and singing along with holiday and music from our childhoods, all whilecreating wonderful quilts, bags, gifts, etc. (and there's usually a little swearing when things aren’t going so well). This trip is such a great way to get into the holiday season and get started on or finishing some of the gifts we have planned for the December holidays.

Now knowing this is such a busy time of year for and for most everyone, why I ever thought that I would have time to host a sewing challenge in November is beyond me, so I have decided to postpone those plans until the new year. So instead, let’s all focus on what we want to do and enjoy our holidays, and as part of our new year’s goals, we will have our first sewing challenge! In the meantime, please enjoy all of my makes from October and the November quilt retreat, and I’ll be sure to continue to share what I get accomplished through December too. In the meantime, happy sewing and celebrating!
